Dear colleagues, dear members,

Laboratory Animal Sciences brings us together every year to discuss scientific, regulatory, ethical, and technical topics. For the 2025 conference, we have decided to address the relationship between technology and animal research .

On behalf of AFSTAL, I therefore have the pleasure of inviting you to the 49th Conference of our Association which will be held from November 19 to 21, 2025 in Nantes and whose title will be:

“Animals and Machines” .

Technology has become ubiquitous in all areas of society, and this is of course also the case in the field of research.

In support activities, machines are used by animal facility teams to modernize approaches, free up time and energy, improve health quality, monitor animals 24/7, improve work ergonomics, etc. In research projects, machines enable the acquisition of more and more precise data, or the implementation of perfectly calibrated and monitored protocols.

Technology is therefore an important factor in progress for research. But conversely, research is also essential for the development of new technologies: imaging, diagnostic and treatment devices, medical devices requiring research and development phases that still necessarily go through in vivo phases, to benefit human or animal health.

Finally, technology provides new tools that are essential for continuing to develop alternative methods and moving forward on the 3Rs.

But let's not forget humans, because whatever technology brings, it will never replace the animal science and research teams that remain at the heart of animal research. Research and a culture of care are only possible thanks to the commitment of people, individually and collectively. The "Human-animal bond" is more relevant than ever, both within our animal facilities and beyond.

This year again, we will be paying particular attention to feedback. This is why the conference program will include open communications and a dedicated poster session . Supplier workshops will also be offered.

Europe's largest trade show will be accessible throughout the conference, fostering discussion and exchange between attendees and exhibitors. All the essential partners, suppliers, and distributors of equipment and services in the field of laboratory animal science will be present. While participating in the scientific program, you can discover the latest innovations and expand your professional and personal network.

AFSTAL therefore expects many of you for its 49th Conference which, as every year, will be organized in such a way as to make this event as friendly as it is studious.

For the Organizing Committee
Camille MÉNARD, President of AFSTAL
